Once Were Warriors

Once Were Warriors is one of my favourite films. I saw it for the first time in the 90s and it made me cry. It follows a modern Maori family (the descendents of Maori warriors) in New zealand and depicts the impact of domestic abuse and being outcasts in society. Based on the novel by Alan Duff and directed by Lee Tamahori, it's an unflinching look at domestic violence. The performances from Rena Owen and Temuera Moririson are stunning. Rena won awards for her role in this and rightly so, her performance is so authentic and true it still gives me goosebumps. Morrison has an incredibe screen presence. His portrayal of the abusive, dynamic and complex Jake "the muss" Heke is superb. If you haven't seen it, get a hold of a copy. It's a heartbreaking, powerful film.
